Newcastle United are reportedly set to do battle with Burnley over talented Benfica full-back Nuno Tavares.

According to a report from O Jogo, the two Premier League sides are keen on the 21-year-old, but face competition from Napoli who are currently the side showing the most interest in the starlet.

The Portuguese giants have apparently slapped a £25 million asking price on the youngster to ward off potential suitors.

Tavares has really caught the eye since making his debut for the club in August 2019.

Since then he’s gone on to make 37 first-team appearances for the club.

Newcastle are said to be watching Tavares closely, and will surely have to retain their Premier League status to stand any chance of signing the Portugal U21 international.

Left-back is still an area of weakness for Newcastle, with Jamal Lewis having struggled since his move from Norwich City.

Matt Ritchie is fairly likely to leave in the summer after trying to do so in January and then recently having bust-up with Steve Bruce.

Tavares is an exciting prospect Newcastle surely stand no chance over

Even if Newcastle stay in the Premier League, a potential £25 million swoop for Tavares just feels very unlikely.

Following the struggles of Lewis, it’s difficult to see big money being made available for another young left-back.

He is surely the wrong kind of signing anyway. The Magpies would be better off looking to re-sign Jetro Willems – who is a free agent this summer – with the younger Lewis to play second fiddle until he reaches the level required.
