As revealed by Newcastle’s official site on Deadline Day, the Magpies have completed the signing of Bradley Cross after he had a successful trial on Tyneside.
The 19-year-old, who received strong interest from other Premier League clubs according to Newcastle’s announcement, has signed a two-year contract and will initially link up with Chris Hogg’s development side.
Cross spent two years on loan at Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 from South African side Bidvest Wits.
The teenager’s contract ended in June, but we’ve moved quickly to snap him up despite the aforementioned interest from other top-flight clubs.
When speaking about why the Magpies signed Cross, Hogg told the club’s official site: ‘It’s an option where we looked at to bring in a left-footed defender and add some quality to the group but also to try and enhance the environment on a personal level too.’
The defender has also represented South Africa at Under-20 level, and while he’s had an unusual career so far having been loaned to Germany from South Africa, he must have some talent seeing as he passed a trial.
Cross joins another exciting prospect in Rodrigo Vilca in Hogg’s development side.
The Peruvian playmaker was signed earlier in October, and will also spend time in the youth ranks in order to acclimatise to English football.
Presumably, we may not see Cross in Steve Bruce’s starting eleven anytime soon, but we could have a decent prospect on our hands given the fact other Premier League sides were interested in him.
