Newcastle are lining up a move Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, according to Portuguese outlet Record, via Chronicle Live.
The Uruguayan striker has been on the radar at a few Premier League clubs, with Newcastle the latest to emerge.
Inter, Real Madrid and Manchester City are all monitoring the availability of the 22-year-old talisman.
Right now, the player’s agent is actually in Madrid discussing terms with Atletico Madrid.
As a result, Newcastle might need to move quickly in order to register their interest in the player.
Nunez operates as a centre-forward or in the number 10 role. During 2021/22 he has made 15 appearances, scoring eight goals and claiming two assists.
He has been with Benfica for a little over a year having arrived in 2020 from Almeria in Spain.
In 59 appearances for the Portuguese outfit, he has found the net 22 times and claimed 14 assists.
Eddie Howe will ask PIF to stick their hands in their pockets during the January window.
Adding players could prove tricky though with Newcastle failing to win any of their opening 12 games of the season.
Firepower is certainly required. The Magpies do have Callum Wilson, although beyond him there is very little in reserve.
Exciting: Nunez would be ideal signing for Newcastle
Nunez is an energetic performer and he’d bring a lot to the table for Newcastle.
Although he’s renowned for scoring goals his game is about far more than just sticking the ball in the net.
He is capable of running into the channels and doesn’t mind holding the ball up either.
Having been taken over, the club’s supporters will be hoping to land some statement additions in January.
Nunez could be a real coup for the football club and Newcastle must act quickly.
