According to The Sun on Sunday (20/9; page 57), Newcastle are refusing to give up their pursuit of Arsenal’s Rob Holding, despite Mikel Arteta’s strong stance on the centre-back’s future.
Sky Sports reported that the Magpies were in talks with the Gunners for the ex-Bolton man, and the aforementioned report by The Sun claimed that a house on Tyneside had even been found for the defender.
However, Arteta said that the Englishman was ‘going nowhere‘ after recording an opening day win over Fulham.
Despite that stern stance, Steve Bruce isn’t giving up. Newcastle are hoping that Arsenal make another U-turn on the 25-year-old’s future.
In our view, Lee Charnley should give this one up and move on to another centre-back target, if there is one.
Holding has shone for the Gunners this term, delivering standout displays against Liverpool in the Community Shield and also in the Premier League as Arsenal have recorded two wins from two.
The Newcastle target has struck up a nice partnership with Gabriel Magalhães, and an exit feels highly unlikely.
In that respect, we simply can’t waste time putting all of our eggs into one basket.
It looks like Holding has a firm place under Arteta now, and with just two weeks left until the transfer deadline, we must put the building blocks in place for another target if we haven’t already done so.
As impressive as the Arsenal centre-back has been and would presumably be for us at St James’ Park, it’s time to move on.
If the Gunners do somehow change their stance, then great – we should definitely go back in.
However, we cannot sit around and wait for that possibility – it would be a huge risk to do so.
