Report: Newcastle now want to sign 'brilliant' 27-year-old with the same agent as Eddie Howe

Newcastle United have now joined the race to sign Benfica left-back Alejandro Grimaldo.

That’s according to Tribal Football, who report the Magpies are set to battle it out with Juventus, Inter Milan, Napoli, Manchester City and Arsenal if they choose to make a move for the 27-year-old defender.

The report claims Toon manager Eddie Howe is a bid admirer of the Spaniard, and that negotiations could prove to be simpler than usual as the 44-year-old shares the same agent as the player.

Grimaldo has told Benfica that he wants to leave the club, with hope of making the move overseas firmly on his mind.

However, as an obastacle to Newcastle, Juventus are leading the race to secure his services, as they hope to lure him to Turin as a free agent next summer.

Howe is a big admirer of Grimaldo

Despite making his move permanent this summer in a deal worth £15m, Matt Targett has never fully established himself as a definite mainstay in Howe’s favoured XI.

Thus far this season, the former Aston Villa man has featured in the Toon’s starting side on just four occasions – often coming off the bench to make relatively short cameos.

More recently, January signing Dan Burn has been favoured at left-back, despite originally being bought to slot in at centre-back.

The 30-year-old has started on the left-hand side of the defence in the Magpies’ last six games – five of which they emphatically won.

However, naturally deemed a more central player, Howe could look to add another left-sided defender to his ranks.

Having been hailed as ‘brilliant’ by journalist Zach Lowy, the Spaniard could end up being a fine signing to make at St James’ Park.

The former U21 Spain international has a wealth of experience at the top level, having played the full 90 minutes in all five of the Portuguese outfit’s Champions League fixtures this season.

Impressively for a left-back, Grimaldo has bagged 15 goals and 42 assists in 174 Liga Portugal appearances. This could be a shine of promise for Howe, who could use that attacking flair down the left-hand side of his defence.

With heavy competition expected in the battle to secure his signature, it awaits to be seen as to whether Howe will exploit his shared agent as means of getting an advantage in negotiations.
