Newcastle United are now eyeing a move for Napoli winger Hirving Lozano, according to La Repubblica.
The 27-year-old is currently under contract until the summer of 2024, and the Italian club have undergone talks with the hope of extending his deal.
However, it’s claimed these negotiations have not gone well, and consequently, the Mexico international could leave at the end of the season.
This situation has caught the eye of the Magpies and Arsenal, and a number of unnamed Bundesliga teams.
In the past, Lozano has ‘repeatedly expressed’ his desire to play in the Premier League, having been linked with various moves to England over the years.
It is believed that both the Toon and the Gunners are ‘courting’ the player, ahead of a potential swoop in the summer.
Newcastle now eyeing Lozano
Having signed for Napoli in 2019 for £37m, the attacker has since made 134 appearances for the club. Over this three-year period, Lozano has managed to bag 30 goals and 16 assists – having become an advocate for Mexican football whilst playing in Europe.
Hailed by former manager Gennaro Gattuso for his ‘crazy’ speed, the 27-year-old would certainly love to test his abilities in the Premier League.
Lozano has been in and out of the Napoli XI thus far this season. Although he has made 15 Serie A appearances, he has only started eight of these games.
This is similar to his stats in the Champions League, in which he has started two out of the five matches he has featured in.
Napoli have emerged as one of the best teams in Europe this season, so this doesn’t necessarily reflect on the winger’s ability.
Therefore, if Eddie Howe still wants to sign another attacker this year, Lozano could be a strong addition for the Magpies.
