According to Get French Football News, Newcastle have made contact with Guingamp over the availability of Matthias Phaeton.

GFFN state that the Magpies have not advanced talks from a mere enquiry at this stage, and there is major doubt over whether Newcastle actually intend to take their interest further than that.

As of now, there has only been contact made with Phaeton’s entourage, while Guingamp have not yet revealed how much they’d like for the 20-year-old attacker.

The Colombes-born striker – who stands at 1.85m (6 foot 1 inches) according to Transfermarkt – has netted two goals in just 34 minutes of action in Ligue 1 this season.

On that basis, Phaeton appears to be a clinical frontman, and one who has a high ceiling for improvement at just 20 years of age.

It is intriguing to see GFFN note that there is major doubt over whether or not we’ll take our interest further at this stage, although another striker would surely struggle for game-time at St James’ Park right now.

Bruce currently has Andy Carroll, Joelinton, Dwight Gayle and Callum Wilson at his disposal, all of whom are fighting for just two places up for grabs in the Magpies boss’ preferred 4-4-2 formation.

The ex-Sunderland manager has used that system more than any other this term, as WhoScored shows.
