Former Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend looks set to become a free agent.

The 29-year-old’s contract at Crystal Palace is set to expire this summer, and it doesn’t look like a new one is on the horizon.

According to the Times, Townsend is likely to leave for free, alongside Wayne Hennessey.

And that could be good news for Newcastle.

It was reported last month that the Magpies are interested in bringing Townsend back to the club.

The Chronicle claimed in April that the midfielder is one of multiple potential free agents the club are interested in.

Townsend only spent half a season at St James’ Park, but certainly impressed.

He joined in January 2016 for £12million, as Steve McClaren spent big to try and avoid relegation.

However, Newcastle eventually went down, and Townsend wanted to stay in the Premier League to protect his England aspirations.

Less than six months after arriving, he left for Palace for £13million.

Five years on and he looks set to leave for nothing. But would Townsend be welcome back at St James’ Park?

While he might not be a starter, he would certainly add more depth in a position where we need to improve.

For all our attacking players, most of them either want to play on the left or through the middle. But Townsend is at his best when he’s on the right, cutting inside onto his lethal left foot.

We saw him use that to great effect back in 2016. Townsend scored four times in 13 games for the Magpies.

In a summer where money will likely be tight, signing Townsend on a free might not be a bad idea.
