Newcastle’s pursuit of a Jetro Willems replacement has taken them to Tottenham.
According to the Telegraph, the Magpies will consider a move for Danny Rose, who is out of favour under new boss Jose Mourinho.
Rose has only started once since Mourinho took over at Spurs, and he didn’t even make the match day squad for Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Watford.
The Telegraph claim that Newcastle will likely look to loan the defender, having targeted him in the summer as well.
Would Rose be a decent acquisition? He’s hardly in the best of form, but will have a point to prove. The 29-year-old surely still has aspirations of being included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s European Championships.
Willems became a fan favourite at Newcastle because of his talent on the ball and partnership with Allan Saint-Maximin. He scored two crackers for the Magpies, one at Liverpool and another versus Manchester City. In contrast, Rose hasn’t found the net since December 2016.
And is the England international the most resilient defensively? He’s certainly a big name, but he might not be the right fit for Newcastle United right now.
Steve Bruce needs to bring in a left-back, and Rose would certainly grab the headlines as a marquee arrival. However, that doesn’t guarantee he’ll be a success.
