According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle and West Ham are interested in signing Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani, with boss Andrea Pirlo reportedly ready to sell to the highest bidder.

The report states that the Hammers are eyeing the 7-cap Italy international in case their pursuit of James Tarkowski falls through, while Steve Bruce’s side are interested but are exploring loan moves.

The Daily Mail also say our budget has been hit by the arrivals of Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser, Jamal Lewis and Jeff Hendrick.

Rugani was once a very highly-rated young defender. He shone for Maurizio Sarri’s Empoli side, earning lofty praise from the ex-Chelsea boss.

As quoted by Corriere dello Sport in 2015 (via Gianluca Di Marzio), Sarri said: ‘Rugani is ready for any European club. He is strong from all points of view, has outstanding mentality, and possesses incredible desire to improve.’

Bruce seems very keen to add another centre-back to the squad. The Daily Mail also state that the Magpies had an arrangement with Arsenal’s Rob Holding, but that has stalled.

There has also been interest in Calum Chambers, according to TEAMtalk.

With Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark at our disposal, it doesn’t feel as if central defence is a department in huge need of reinforcements.

Despite that, Bruce clearly isn’t 100% happy with his options if these continued transfer reports are anything to go by.
