Newcastle United are reportedly keen to sign talented Benfica full-back Nuno Tavares.
According to a report from Portuguese outlet O Jogo, the Magpies are showing an interest in the 21-year-old left-back, who has enjoyed a good campaign over in Liga NOS.
Tavares, who made his first-team debut last season, has apparently been the subject of interest from the Magpies for a while, and it’s explained the club were even willing to pay €15 million/£13 million a season-and-a-half ago.
Burnley are also said to be in the hunt, but at the moment Newcastle are showing a more ‘intense’ interest in the player according to the report.
Tavares is highly-rated in Portugal and is tipped to have a very bright career.
Earlier this year, football agent Cesar Boaventura spoke about Tavares amid links to Manchester United.
He gave an exciting verdict, saying (via talkSPORT): “This player can play for any club in Europe. But right now he can’t. He has to learn and grow.
“He’s a fast player, one of the fastest players in the whole Portuguese league.
“He’s young. Maybe he’s not a player ready for a big one. But he could be in the future. Within a couple of years. He can become one of the best in Europe.”
Tavares can be the competition Lewis needs
Tavares sounds like a player with fantastic promise.
Boaventura’s assessment is exciting, but Newcastle will surely have to ensure their Premier League safety to stand any chance of signing the player.
Jamal Lewis could do with some competition at left-back having endured a difficult start at St. James’ Park, and if Jetro Willems isn’t going to be that man, as many Newcastle fans would like, then Tavares could be an exciting alternative.
