Newcastle United are ‘serious contenders’ to sign PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo in January, according to The Mirror.

Manchester United are hoping they remain as the frontrunners in the race to sign the 23-year-old World Cup star. Erik ten Hag worked with the Dutchman whilst he was in charge of the PSV academy more than a decade ago, and he has maintained a friendship with the player ever since.

Despite this, the Red Devils face competition for the £50m signing. Real Madrid, Arsenal and the Magpies are all keen to sign the youngster during the winter window.

The Toon’s financial power has made them ‘serious contenders’ to make the statement signing.

Before the World Cup kicked off, there was already huge speculation surrounding Gakpo. However, after an impressive tournament out in Qatar, it appears this has risen astronomically.

As an attacker who can play anywhere across the front-line, the Netherlands international demonstrated his natural goal-scoring instinct for Louis van Gaal’s side, having bagged in each of Holland’s group game fixtures.

Having illustrated he is more than capable to perform with the best of the best at the top level, PSV have now conceded they are set to lose the youngster in January.

Prior to Public Investment Fund’s takeover of the club, it would have been unfathomable to see Newcastle mentioned in the same transfer race with a team like Madrid.

Whilst this is an incredible sign of just how far the Toon have come, it also brings difficult transfer battles. Although the club may have the money, the lure of these European giants will always be a massive issue when trying to recruit the next level of new talent.

However, the Magpies are still considered ‘serious contenders’ in the fight to secure Gakpo, so hopefully the club can pull off a masterclass in January.
