Newcastle United have reportedly agreed a deal in principle to sign Brandon Williams on loan from Manchester United.
The Shields Gazette are reporting the Magpies are at the top of the list to sign the 20-year-old this month, despite interest from a host of other clubs.
The development comes amid the struggles of Jamal Lewis, who has recently lost his place in the starting XI.
The £15 million signing from Norwich City is yet to really settle at St. James’ Park, and it seems the Magpies are ready to increase the competition for the position.
Williams has been on the periphery at United this season, making just five first-team appearances so far in 2020/21.
After making 36 appearances last term and starting the Europa League semi-final against Sevilla, the summer signing of Alex Telles has pushed him down the pecking order, and he has apparently been told he can leave the club this month.
Newcastle appear to have taken advantage of that and are now expected to complete the signing of the left-back before January 31.
Williams could be shrewd business
Alan Shearer gave Williams ‘special mention’ after his first Premier League start against Brighton in November 2019 (Match of the Day), and his early form at United suggests there is a player in there.
The youngster – who supposedly earns £65,000-a-week at United (Spotrac) – is a left-back, but being naturally right-footed means he is capable of covering on the opposite side which is always handy.
Potentially, this could be a decent move in the short term. If it doesn’t work out, then the club could move for Jetro Willems – linked with a return to St. James’ – in the summer as he’ll be available on a free.
