Newcastle United have been linked with signing Jorginho from Chelsea in 2023, and the midfielder is now expected to leave Stamford Bridge this year.

That is according to the Athletic, who state that senior players at Chelsea believe this will be the 31-year-old’s last season with Graham Potter’s side. Interestingly, the Athletic also suggest that they could replace him with two players Newcastle have been linked with – Edson Alvarez and Moises Caicedo.

Jorginho’s contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire this summer, having signed a five-year deal when he arrived for £57million in 2018 from Napoli.

Jorginho has been a key player for Chelsea ever since his move to London, helping them win the Champions League, Europa League and Club World Cup. He also helped Italy win the European Championship in 2021, producing a ‘world class‘ display to beat England in the final.

Now Jorginho looks set for a transfer in 2023, and he is someone Newcastle have been linked with.

Jorginho to leave Chelsea, but Newcastle move is unlikely

During the Christmas period, the Daily Mail stated that Newcastle are interested in signing Jorginho. They claimed that he was Eddie Howe’s ‘prime target‘, with the Magpies considering a January move.

Newcastle are in the market for a midfielder following Jonjo Shelvey’s latest injury, so in that sense links with Jorginho made some sense.

However, he does not sound like a player who would suit Howe’s style, and that is reportedly what the club think too. The Telegraph recently debunked the Daily Mail’s claim about Jorginho, stating that he is not a target for Newcastle.

They added that Toon officials do not believe he is mobile enough to succeed in Howe’s midfield, while wages could also be an issue.

Jorginho is certainly a big name player with a lofty reputation, but the Magpies have done well to avoid players like that since the change of ownership. While they have gone for experience with the likes of Kieran Trippier, the big additions have all been young players who can grow and develop at St James’ Park.

There is no denying that he is a top class player, but a move to Newcastle never sounded likely. However, a move elsewhere certainly appears to be on the cards according to Jorginho’s Chelsea teammates.
