Joe Willock could reportedly become one of the top-earning players at Newcastle United.

The midfielder remains an Arsenal player just at the moment.

But a breakthrough was reportedly reached on Sunday, with The Athletic claiming the two clubs had come to £20 million+ agreement.

Days on, there hasn’t been any more movement.

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has suggested personal terms not yet being agree is the reason for the hold up.

Apparently, it is not to do with wages though.

But speaking of wages, the Chronicle say Willock could potentially be among the top earners at St. James’ if/when he signs.

At the moment, Jonjo Shelvey and Allan Saint-Maximin are the best-paid, each picking up around £90,000-a-week according to the publication.

Willock’s representatives are said to be hoping to negotiate a deal that reflects their client’s importance to the team.

At the moment, he earns £20,000-a-week at Arsenal according to Spotrac.

Don’t make him the top earner

Newcastle should move to make Willock one of the highest-paid.

But the club should probably avoid making him the outright top earner if possible.

He had a remarkable run whilst on loan last season and undoubtedly makes Newcastle a better team.

But to pay him more than the likes of Callum Wilson and Saint-Maximin would be a bit over the top.

That would also increase the pressure on him to perform quite significantly.

Hopefully, Willock and his representatives aren’t pushing for that.
