According to The Daily Mail, Sheffield United ‘retain an interest’ in signing Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle, despite the fact he is currently sidelined with an injury.
The information can be found further down the report regarding the Blades’ interest in Liverpool forward Rhian Brewster, who Crystal Palace – Gayle’s former side – are also interested in.
The ex-Peterborough striker made just ten league starts under Steve Bruce last season, but featured a lot more towards the end of the campaign.
The 29-year-old – who cost us a reported £10 million – has been pushed further down the pecking order following Callum Wilson’s arrival.
Gayle did, however, score four goals which is a decent return given his lack of opportunities.
Despite the competition ahead of him, it would be sad to see our No.12 depart.
He was among our most important players when achieving an immediate return to the Premier League under Rafa Benitez, scoring 23 Championship goals for the Spaniard.
Gayle then went on to score a further six goals under the ex-Liverpool boss in the top-flight, taking his total tally for the former Real Madrid boss to 29.
He could be the second striker to depart St James’ Park this window following Yoshinori Muto’s loan move to Eibar.
However, he deserves a fresh chance elsewhere given his excellent service to the Magpies – should he want one, of course.
