Newcastle United would reportedly have to fork out around £12 million in order to sign Kris Ajer from Celtic.
That is the valuation the Hoops have placed on the Norway international, according to The Herald.
It comes after the Daily Mail last month that Newcastle were planning to table an £8 million bid.
That report also claimed that Celtic were hoping to receive £35 million for the central defender.
It seems the Herald recognise the fact Ajer will be heading into the final year of his contract this summer, and Celtic could therefore be under a bit of pressure to sell.
They won’t want to lose him, but know it would be best to cash in rather than see his value plummet if he wasn’t going to sign a new contract.
Ajer has been at Parkhead since the summer of 2016, joining from Norwegian outfit IK Start.
It has not been the best of seasons for him – and most of his teammates for that matter – but Ajer is still highly regarded in Scotland.
£12 million asking price should appeal to Newcastle
Newcastle should not be thinking twice if £12 million really is the price Celtic have named for Ajer.
The star has big potential, and has already drawn comparisons to Virgil van Dijk, who of course spent a couple of seasons at Celtic before coming to the Premier League with Southampton.
Newcastle absolutely need to bolster their backline, and Ajer has to be worth considering.
