Newcastle United reportedly face competition from Chelsea in the race to sign Moises Caicedo this month.

The Brighton midfielder is on Eddie Howe’s radar, as the Magpies look to bring in a replacement for the injured Jonjo Shelvey.

Caicedo is an option for Newcastle, although the Telegraph recently claimed that a move to St James’ Park is seen as a longshot by Toon officials. And a transfer might be even more unlikely following a report coming out of Stamford Bridge.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are considering an approach to sign the talented 21-year-old. They too have injury problems, and have massively suffered during the absence of N’Golo Kante.

Like Newcastle, the Blues are also in the market for a midfielder. They were heavily linked with World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez earlier in the window, but it looks like he is now staying with Benfica.

That could see Chelsea turn to Caicedo, and a possible reunion with Graham Potter.

Newcastle could miss out on Moises Caicedo to Chelsea

The report comes after Chelsea lost again on Thursday night. They were beaten 2-1 by Fulham at Craven Cottage, falling to defeat in the West London derby.

It leaves them in 10th position, 10 points shy of the top four. There is a sense of panic among Chelsea fans, who have seen no real improvement since Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel.

Todd Boehly continues to splash the cash, and has already brought in David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile and Joao Felix this month. The latter had a debut to forget against Fulham, as he received a red card in the 58th minute.

And with injuries mounting up and form not improving, the American billionaire could be convinced to put his hand in his pocket again.

It has previously been claimed that Caicedo will cost £60million this month. That is far too expensive for Newcastle, who are acting with caution in the transfer market. But it could be attainable for Chelsea, who appear to be willing and able to spend whatever they like.

The worse Chelsea play, the more likely it is that Boehly splashes the cash further. That puts Newcastle at real risk of missing out on Caicedo.
