Newcastle United fans may be dismayed to learn that Barcelona are reportedly now eyeing one of their former players.
The Spanish giants are entering a new era under Joan Laporta, and a number of players in their squad are ageing.

Sergio Busquets, 32, is one such player, and it seems Barca are ready to try and land a long-term replacement for the maestro.
Mundo Deportivo have claimed that Mikel Merino is one of a few players on their radar.
They are also said to be looking at Manuel Locatelli and Eduardo Camavinga.
Merino, of course, left for around £10 million (El Correo) Newcastle back in 2018 after just one season at St. James’ Park.

He returned to Spain to join Real Sociedad where he has been ever since.
It’s been a great stint there for Merino, who recently won the Copa del Rey that was rescheduled from last season.
The club are currently fifth in La Liga, and are on course to qualify for next season’s Europa League.
Merino has been a key figure, making 26 league appearances and 36 in all competitions.
Merino sale could come back to bite
If Merino goes and signs for Barca, then that would be a real kick in the teeth for Newcastle.

Many felt his sale at the time was the wrong decision.
That Barcelona feel he may now be good enough to replace Busquets, a man who has enjoyed a truly stunning career at the Nou Camp, perhaps tells you everything you need to know about the quality Merino now has.
