Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Lee Kang-in.

The January transfer window always brings around some strange rumours, especially since Newcastle United were taken over by PIF a few years ago.

This month there has been talk of Marcus Rashford to Newcastle United, which was obviously nonsensical, while there was also a claim made about the Magpies being interested in PSG attacker Lee Kang-in.

It was reported in Italy that Newcastle were preparing a move in the next few days to sign the South Korean player, with PSG possibly ready to let him leave for £33million.

Talk of an imminent approach from the Magpies seemed odd, and now a new report has poured cold water on the possibility of Lee Kang-in moving to St James’ Park this month.

Update on Lee Kang-in’s future at PSG

The update comes from journalist Ben Jacobs, who has stated on X that PSG have no plans to let Lee Kang-in leave the club during the January transfer window.

That is a blow for Newcastle United and for Arsenal, who Jacobs cites as being keen to sign the 23-year-old.

Jacobs wrote on X: “Although true Arsenal appreciate Lee Kang-in, PSG have no plans to sanction an exit. No contact made with the French champions, but understand any offers will be rebuffed in January.”

Newcastle United have only had one South Korean player

As a right winger, Lee Kang-in would have been a good signing for Newcastle United. However, the rumour always felt fanciful, and now PSG have decided that he is staying put.

That means that Newcastle will not sign the South Korea international in January, which means their history of South Korean players remains the same.

Throughout Newcastle United’s entire history, the Magpies have only ever had one player from South Korea. That was Ki Sung-yueng.

Rafa Benitez signed him on a free transfer in 2018, with the midfielder agreeing a two-year deal.

Ki made 23 appearances for the Magpies, with his minutes diminishing once Steve Bruce replaced Benitez as manager. The former Sunderland player would leave Newcastle United in January 2020 by mutual consent.
