Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah has stated that he would like to play in the Premier League, amidst links with Newcastle United earlier this summer.
The 27-year-old Germany international seemingly wants to leave Xabi Alonso’s side this summer, and it was previously reported that Newcastle had spoken to intermediaries over a potential move in the last few months.
In an interview with BILD, Tah admitted that he would love the challenge of playing in the Premier League, and wants to test himself at a high level.
“I’ve attracted interest from elsewhere, but it has always been my goal to play in the Premier League because I think it is the best league in the world, and to play at that level is obviously attractive to me,” he stated.
“I’m 27 now, I’ve been here for many years and I’ve developed. I have the feeling that maybe if I go to another league, I can take another step forward in my personal development.”
Could Newcastle sign Tah?
Tah’s comments indicate a desire to play at the highest level, and with Newcastle in the Champions League, St James’ Park would be a very attractive destination for him.
There is also merit in Newcastle pursuing a deal for Tah. With two years remaining on his contract, he may be attainable at a reasonable price, and the tall defender could help raise Newcastle’s level even further.

Whilst Fabian Schar was very reliable last season, having extra competition in his position could help the 31-year-old, and Tah may even be an upgrade on him.
Tah ranks as a significantly better passer, and can still provide a physical presence alongside Sven Botman should he replace Schar.
Whilst the Swiss international is more dominant in the air, despite being shorter, having both options in the squad could allow Eddie Howe to rotate his back line more next season, and given that Tah could jump at the chance to join, it is certainly a deal worth exploring.
