Newcastle United are considering a move for FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, who was one of Liga Portugal’s standout young players last season.
After missing out on Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United, Eddie Howe is keen to begin work on signing a new striker for Newcastle United this summer.
With Alexander Isak’s future looking as though it will be away from St James’ Park, Newcastle need to sign at least one new striker as his replacement. Nicolas Jackson is linked and is valued at around £60million by the Magpies, while Yoane Wissa is also likely to sign this summer.
However, Jackson could prove too costly for Newcastle, while Wissa is most likely a replacement for Callum Wilson, rather than Isak. Newcastle’s striker search has now taken them to Portugal, where they have registered an interest in 21-year-old striker Samu Aghehowa, who scored 19 goals in the Liga Portugal last season.
While it was significantly less than the attacking returns achieved by Viktor Gyokores, Aghehowa ranked joint second in the league’s top scorers charts. As Newcastle look to sign their next dynamic striker, fans have swarmed to social media to share their views.

Newcastle United fans happy to sign Samu Aghehowa this summer
Aghehowa undoubtedly has a lot of potential, but Howe will have to do a lot of work to get him up to speed with English football and get the best out of him.
At just 21, Aghehowa has a lot of scope for improvement, and Howe is the ideal person to help him reach his potential. With several strikers on the shortlist, Newcastle fans think they are onto a winner with Aghehowa and have urged Howe’s recruitment team to sign him up.
“Aghehowa. Now we are talking,” said one Newcastle fan, while another added: “This one has actually got me excited.”
This Newcastle fan referred to Liam Delap and Joao Pedro’s moves to Chelsea, saying: “Finally – a target I actually want. Can’t wait to be gutted when he ends up at Chelsea.”
“Good player, physical, powerful. First touch needs work.” said this Newcastle fan, who believes work needs to be done with Aghehowa.
Another fan added: “Would be a game changer for Newcastle. Hope it happens.”
Finally, this Newcastle fan said: “Hard to get excited after the disappointment of this window so far but Samu would be a statement signing. This lad is better than Sesko, a proper number 9.”
How much Samu Aghehowa will cost Newcastle United this summer
With Newcastle placing a club-record bid for Sesko, it is clear that the money is there to spend before the transfer window closes. However, Howe’s recruitment team must be cautious with how they spend their money, as PSR is still lingering.
It looks like Newcastle will have to break their transfer record if they wish to land Aghehowa this summer, as his release clause far exceeds the £63million they paid for Isak in 2022.

According to The Athletic, Aghehowa has a release clause of €100million (£86.7million), so they would have to break the bank to let him go this summer.
It may be the case that Newcastle may have to concede defeat due to his release clause, but they may have received encouragement from Porto that a deal can be done for less, given that they are considering a move.
