Newcastle weighing up a move for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the summer

Liverpool have decided to release England midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at the end of the season and Newcastle United are among three Premier League clubs interested.

Oxlade-Chamberlain‘s contract is set to expire in the summer and Liverpool have seemingly decided to let him leave as they’ve not opened talks. That leaves the England midfielder free to find a new club in the summer with Newcastle, Brighton and Aston Villa lining up to take the 29-year-old according to the Daily Mail.

The former Arsenal man was tracked by Brighton in January as a replacement for Leandro Trossard who moved to the Emirates.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has struggled to break into Jurgen Klopp’s side

Ox has made just 12 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool this term, scoring one goal in the process and is clearly not part of Jurgen Klopp‘s plans despite his versatility. He’s able to play across the middle in any position which led to Paul Merson describing him as ‘priceless‘ and a ‘manager’s dream’.

His experience playing in big games for top teams would be a real benefit to Newcastle next season as they look set to be playing in European competition unless something really bad happens with their form.

Despite registering 35 international caps for England, Oxlade-Chamberlain hasn’t featured for the Three Lions since November 2019 as the likes of Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka burst onto the scene.

Ox has won it all and that experience is invaluable

At 29 he’s no spring chicken and a bit older than players Newcastle tend to be looking at, but as I said before, his experience playing in big games should offset that. He’s won 12 trophies in his career and that kind of experience is invaluable and something that Newcastle lack across the squad.

It might not sound like an exciting prospect, especially given that he can’t force himself into the Liverpool side that are currently trying to surpass Newcastle in the league, but it’s all about play style. He’s obviously not suited to the way Klopp plays, but his high energy is perfect for Eddie Howe.

As a free transfer, Oxlade-Chamberlain would be a strong signing for Newcastle. I think he’s worth a punt as long as his wage demands aren’t astronomical.
