Newcastle United’s James Trafford alternative is slipping away as Eddie Howe’s nightmare continues

Newcastle United had visions of signing James Trafford, but he is not going to be the Magpies’ long-term number one.

In rather embarrassing fashion, Manchester City are signing Trafford ahead of Newcastle United.

After more than 12 months of chasing him, Eddie Howe’s side are missing out on the 22-year-old stopper. It sums up the Magpies’ ineffectiveness in the transfer market, with key target after key target passing them by.

With Trafford on his way back to Man City, Newcastle United will consider pursuing an alternative. They do have options, but one of them is also set to become unavailable.

Lucas Chevalier reaches PSG agreement despite Newcastle United interest

In October 2024, Geordie Boot Boys reported that Newcastle were watching Lucas Chevalier. In June 2025, the Athletic reported that he was a target for Howe this summer.

While some may have hoped for a move for the Frenchman in the wake of the Trafford news, that does not look like it will be the case.

That is because Chevalier is in the process of moving from Lille to Paris Saint-Germain. Fabrizio Romano has reported that the 23-year-old has agreed personal terms with the Ligue 1 champions, with talks between the two clubs ‘ongoing’ regarding the fee.

Lille want £35million for Chevalier, which is more than what Man City are paying Burnley for Trafford.

Goalkeeper suddenly not a priority for Newcastle United

Considering their intense pursuit of Trafford, you would think that signing a goalkeeper was a top priority for the Magpies. However, the Trafford situation was more of an opportunity.

As is often the case with Newcastle, it is an opportunity that is passing them by.

While there is frustration, that will not be followed by panic. Newcastle might not even sign a goalkeeper, as they do have more pressing concerns elsewhere.

Striker is the biggest concern. They need to buy at least one, and that will become two if Alexander Isak leaves.

After that, Newcastle need a centre-back. A centre-midfielder is also required after Sean Longstaff joined Leeds.

Only once those situations are addressed could Newcastle move for a goalkeeper, as they get set to continue with Nick Pope in between the sticks.
