Newcastle United tipped to make William Osula U-turn with new striker in their sights

The revolving door of strikers at Newcastle United could continue in January and William Osula could fall victim to it.

Newcastle United have been tipped to sign a new striker in January by Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, despite the fact the club landed Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa this summer.

While Woltemade has made a fine start to life at Newcastle United, there have been doubts about whether he’s a traditional centre-forward.

His goal tally would suggest he is of course, but there’s little doubt the German brings more to the game than just goals. Wissa, meanwhile, is yet to play.

Osula has impressed this season but, according to Downie, there could still be movement on the Danish forward.

William Osula could leave Newcastle United if they sign a new striker

The Sky Sports reporter was speaking on a video that was posted on YouTube ahead of Newcastle’s Premier League clash with Manchester City on Saturday.

During the video, Downie again talked of his belief that the club would try and sign a new striker in the January transfer window

“I’m pretty certain that Newcastle will try and sign a striker in the January transfer window,” he said.

“From the bits and pieces that I’ve heard, I just feel that Newcastle will go and attempt to sign a striker in January because, without doubt, you need to.”

That, in turn, could see Osula depart.

Newcastle United’s spending power ahead of the January transfer window. Do you expect PIF to actually make a signing?

Premier League PSR isn’t an immediate concern for Newcastle in January. With UEFA’s equivalent rules, they should be absolutely fine too. If they thought there was good value in the market and wanted to spend £100m-plus, they could do.

Football finance expert Adam Williams, speaking to Geordie Boot Boys.

“I still think there’s a chance that Osula could go in January if someone comes in for him,” he added.

“He came so close to going at the end of the summer transfer window. My contacts over in Germany are telling me that there’s still interest from a number of German clubs.

“That could be a move for him, I think he would probably be allowed to go on loan if Newcastle get another striker in.

“He would be allowed on a permanent [deal] if a big money offer came in and Newcastle felt that he wasn’t developing as much as they felt that he would when he arrived.

“That was the feeling in the summer. He’s had positive steps forward since then and he is beginning to show that he’s got that, you saw his cameo off the bench against Fulham.

“Is he developing as quickly as they need? Probably not and that’s why I think the striker situation is one that will be looked at in January.”

Why William Osula deserves better at Newcastle United

Newcastle have been impressed with Osula, who does appear to have made positive steps forward this season.

With that in mind, all this toing and froing over his future cannot be helpful. This is a player who is trying to build something on Tyneside during his limited game time.

Which position should Newcastle United look to strengthen in January?

While football can be ruthless at times, there’s still scope for development. To keep Osula in the summer and then potentially let him go only a few months later feels harsh when he’s played well.

It’s difficult to imagine Newcastle breaking the bank on another forward, having spent well over £100million on that department this summer.

If they were to sign another, it would surely be a younger player who wouldn’t expect to start. They would have to be an improvement on Osula to make any meaningful impact behind Woltemade and Wissa.

The chances of actually finding that kind of player feel remote.
