Newcastle United will likely have money to spend in January but that does not mean they will start overpaying for players.

Indeed, while the January transfer window has been a relatively quiet time for Toon supporters over the last few years, all of that could change at the start of 2026.
Still, the club will still need to be sensible. Just because there’s money to spend right now does not mean they can suddenly go out and break the bank.

Sporting director Ross Wilson wants to improve Newcastle’s scouting network and move for younger players plying their trade around the world, rather than focus on Premier League experience.
That feels wise, particularly as that kind of signing could then potentially be sold on at greater profit.
However, claims from Brazil suggest Newcastle are not ready to be held to ransom over one particular target.
Newcastle United sources tell Palmeiras that Allan Elias costs too much money
According to ESPN Brazil, Newcastle have been talking to Brazilian giants Palmeiras over central midfielder Allan Elias.
The report claims that the 21-year-old is the target of several European clubs ahead of the January window, with the Magpies previously tipped as a potential landing spot.
However, the Sao Paulo club are prepared to demand as much as €45million (roughly £39.5million) for him in January.
ESPN go on to say that sources close to Newcastle suggest that no one will pay that for the midfielder at this stage in his career.

The two alternatives Newcastle United have for Allan Elias
Midfield certainly appears to be an area in which the club are looking to strengthen in January.
Whether they actually manage to or not remains to be seen but, if Allan isn’t available at a reasonable price, then it seems like there are other irons in the fire.
That’s because Newcastle want to sign AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit.
If Smit is not available, Newcastle are considering a move for Auxerre’s Kevin Danois.
It certainly seems as if the signing of a young midfielder, which perhaps informs what might happen next summer amid doubts about Sandro Tonali’s long-term future at the club.
