Newcastle United should sign free agent Andre Ayew this summer - opinion

Andre Ayew has been linked with a move to Newcastle – and the Magpies should do everything in their power to bring him to St James’ Park.

Swansea City endured a failed climb back into the Premier League last campaign – and Ayew was one of their key players. He netted 17 goals and provided four assists.

The season before he scored 16 and marked an impressive seven assists.

The forward played in 92 Championship matches over this period, showing he has the stamina to compete despite being in his thirties.

Claims Newcastle want to sign Andre Ayew

There have now been reports that Newcastle are interested in the player from an African outlet (yen.com) in Ghana.

They state that, as well as Newcastle, the striker has garnered interest from other sides too.

He is a Premier League proven player. In his inaugural Premier League season (2015/16), he bagged 12 goals and two assists for Swansea. His form means he was shipped off for £20million+ to West Ham, before returning to the Welsh club.

With the Hammers, Ayew still scored nine league goals and got five assists from 25 starts (plus 18 sub appearances), which is pretty good going.

Newcastle have the notorious policy of not purchasing seasoned players, but given they put Andy Carroll on the payroll two years ago, maybe that rule has slightly diminished.

To bring in this Premier League-proven player at no extra cost – and use them as a possible replacement for Dwight Gayle – would be a spellbinding piece of business this window.

Ayew recently gave a ‘goodbye’ message to Swansea City. Via Goal he said:

“Hi Jack Army, this is your boy Andre. I’m here to say goodbye. Since the final, it was a difficult period for us, the players and for me personally and the team as a whole, I decided to stay quiet a little bit,” Ayew said in an Instagram video.

“Just wanted to let you guys know that I am so grateful for what you guys have done for me. Thank you so much for the support, thank you so much for the love.”

Ayew will be a wanted man in the English leagues – and Newcastle should attempt to snap him up soon.
