Newcastle United ‘set for major squad rebuild’ in summer 2026 at long last

Newcastle United may finally be set for the rebuild they have so desperately needed this summer.

That, of course, has been said before. Still, previous seasons have seen Newcastle United muddle through the mire before ending in reasonably strong fashion.

Settle the debate – Is Nick Woltemade a striker or a midfielder?!

Indeed, there were difficult times during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons but both had huge moments, with the latter campaign going down in the history books.

This time around, however, things feel different. Newcastle are in limbo and players such as Tino Livramento and Sandro Tonali have been linked away.

Never before in the PIF era has the squad been so exposed, although it seems like decisive action will finally be taken this summer.

Newcastle United set for major rebuild

According to The Athletic, a significant overhaul is expected this summer.

The report suggests that “nobody” inside the club is pretending that there doesn’t need to be a wide-scale rebuild.

Things are indeed looking stale and a significant number of transfers – both in and out – are likely to happen.

Interestingly, Newcastle want to sign a new striker in the summer of 2026, with Chelsea’s Liam Delap touted as a potential target.

The signings of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa are yet to work out, while the club have also been linked with a move for a new goalkeeper.

Big rebuild has been a long time coming at Newcastle

Newcastle made six major signings in the summer of 2025, though two of them in the form of Woltemade and Wissa came as a direct result of Alexander Isak forcing his way out of the club.

Still, it didn’t feel like enough, particularly as three of them haven’t worked out (Anthony Elanga included) thus far. They also remain without a convincing striker or a goalkeeper and desperately short at full-back.

It’s almost certain that much will depend on whether Newcastle can qualify for Europe but a rebuild – no matter how painful it may be in terms of potential departures – is needed.
