Newcastle United relaunch interest in Chelsea midfielder whose idol is Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle United have shown a willingness to wait to sign players during the PIF era. 

Indeed, Newcastle United appear to be prepared to bide their time to land their big targets. 

Both Sven Botman and Anthony Gordon were actually signed the window after the one they were initially linked with moves to St James’ Park in.  

With that in mind, it’s perhaps unsurprising they are again being linked with a move for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos.  

Santos has admitted Bruno Guimaraes is his footballing idol and the 20-year-old has been impressing while on loan at Strasbourg.  

In fact, the French club’s manager Liam Rosenior said in January (via The Athletic): “Andrey is going to have a magnificent career. You forget how young some of them are. Andrey plays like he’s 32.” 

Newcastle were interested in Santos back in 2023 but Chelsea eventually won the race to sign him.  

Now, however, things could be different.

According to Caught Offside, Newcastle are just one of the clubs interested in a move for the 20-year-old central midfielder. 

It’s claimed the player is not yet fully sold on the idea of returning to Chelsea next season, meaning he could be available for around £38-£42million.

The Blues have proven themselves willing to trade players in recent summers, too.

Arsenal, Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan are also understood to be keeping a watching brief. 

What is Andrey Santos’ playing style?

Santos has previously described Newcastle as a “good team” and perhaps they’d be an even better one with him in it. 

Earlier this year, a profile posted on Ligue 1’s official website read: “Santos’ ability to dominate defensively and dictate the tempo of games has impressed many this season, marking a growing maturity in the Brazilian’s game.” 

Certainly, the Brazilian looks an all-action central midfielder. He’s scored nine goals for Strasbourg this season, while also leading the way for tackles per-game (3.5).  

Central midfield is perhaps not a priority position for the team this season given the success of Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton. 

Still, Newcastle have been keen on Santos before and the prospect of him being available again is no doubt exciting.
