Newcastle United now consider surprise January move after the goals dry up for Eddie Howe

Newcastle United are considering strengthening their forward options once again in January, Geordie Boot Boys understands.

Nick Woltemade has been a successful signing for Newcastle United so far this season and there is hope that Yoane Wissa proves the same once he returns from injury.

Still, Eddie Howe’s side are struggling for goals as a whole.

If Kieran Trippier isn’t Newcastle United’s best-ever January transfer signing, who is?

There’s no wrong answers other than Jean-Alain Boumsong 🤣

They are tenth for goals scored in the Premier League this (18) and have never previously finished lower than fifth for that metric in any of Howe’s three full seasons in charge.

Reports have suggested that Newcastle want to sign a new striker in January and that may well be the case, particularly if William Osula is allowed to depart.

However, Geordie Boot Boys have also been told about another area in which the club are considering a move, and it is somewhat surprising.

Newcastle United consider making winger signing in January

Sources have told the website that Newcastle are weighing up a move to sign a new winger in the January transfer window.

That is something of a surprise, considering the strength in depth that Howe has in that particular area.

Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon battle on the left, while Jacob Murphy and Anthony Elanga operate on the right. Elanga, of course, has only just arrived at the club for huge expense.

On paper, that’s a very strong squad indeed but the harsh reality is that the four have contributed to only eight goals in the Premier League all season.

Let’s say Newcastle have a January transfer budget of £100m. How are you spending it?

All on one player? £20m on five different positions? Going big on a goalkeeper and a young-full back gets my vote…

Newcastle United’s likely transfer budget for January 2026 transfer window and what they intend to do

Geordie Boot Boys have previously spoken to football finance expert Adam Williams.

He is of the view that Newcastle could be in a position to have around £100million available in the January transfer window, following the sale of Alexander Isak back in September.

Clearly, that does not mean PIF will blow all of it during a notoriously difficult player trading period such as the winter window.

Still, as also confirmed by iNews, the club do in fact intend to make signings at the turn of the year.

The winter window could be a reasonably busy one on Tyneside, and moving for a new winger could form part of their plans.
