Newcastle United have released a statement following Alexander Isak’s British record move to Liverpool.
After a summer long saga, Newcastle United have sold Isak to Liverpool for £130million.
It is a disappointing end to an ugly few months for the club. Granted, Newcastle have banked a British record fee for a player who wanted out anyway but it is difficult to spin his exit as a positive.
There were 169 days between Isak scoring the winning goal in the Carabao Cup final for Newcastle and him leaving the club. In that time, Newcastle fans had turned on Isak, aiming angry chants at him following his self-imposed exile.
Now, he has departed, but the wounds are unlikely to heal. Newcastle will go on of course but the manner in which the Sweden star left the club was appalling.
On Monday, the club issued a blunt statement confirming his exit.

Newcastle United issue Alexander Isak statement
A statement posted on the Newcastle United official website read: “Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee.
“The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”
Isak and Newcastle will meet again when Eddie Howe’s side travel to Anfield on Sunday 31 January, 2026.
Why Alexander Isak wanted to leave Newcastle United
Isak said Newcastle broke promises in a dramatic Instagram story posted shortly before his move away from the club.
It’s hard to know exactly what he meant, of course. Still, Isak was annoyed he didn’t a new contract in 2024 and is said to have started the 2024/25 campaign in unhappy fashion.
That appears to be the main reason as to why he was so unhappy.
However, it’s hard to imagine that Isak’s head wouldn’t have been turned even if he did sign a new deal at the time.
Newcastle, sadly, simply do not pay their players like the more established elite teams do and clubs such as Liverpool – like it or not – provide a much more realistic chance of winning major trophies.
