Newcastle United handed the chance to sign ‘lethal’ forward who is outscoring Alexander Isak

Newcastle United need to sign a striker who can support Alexander Isak.

That will be the Magpies’ aim this summer, with Callum Wilson potentially set to leave St James’ Park. His Newcastle United contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

While Will Osula has a lot of potential and is improving, Newcastle will need someone with greater quality to serve as Alexander Isak’s understudy.

Signing a striker will be difficult for Paul Mitchell, but an option may have presented itself to the Newcastle United sporting director.

Newcastle United offered Atalanta striker

With the 2025 summer transfer window looming, agents are positioning their clients for potential moves.

According to the Chronicle, intermediaries have approached Newcastle United about the prospect of signing Mateo Retegui.

Retegui currently plays in Serie A for Atalanta, where he has scored 26 goals in all competitions this season. That is one more than what Alexander Isak has managed this season, with the Swedish striker netting his 25th goal of the campaign in Newcastle’s win over Crystal Palace.

The Chronicle add that Retegui could be available for a fee in the region of £50million.

For that kind of money, the 25-year-old would surely only arrive as a replacement for Isak, rather than competition.

Mateo Retegui tipped to become a ‘top player’

Retegui was born in Argentina, but represents Italy at international level.

He plays alongside Sandro Tonali for the Azzurri, with Retegui winning 18 caps so far and scoring six goals.

His goal return this season is incredible, while Italy manager Luciano Spalletti believes that Retegui has all the makings of a ‘top player’.

“He’s a very serious lad,” Spalletti told the Guardian in October 2024.

“Inside the box, he is lethal. And now he has learned how to connect with the team better. He’s going to become a top player.”

Despite having scope to improve and being made available to Newcastle United, it is difficult to envision Retegui becoming the second Italian member of Eddie Howe’s squad.

Unless Isak leaves this summer, Newcastle are not going to spend £50million on a striker. On top of that, Retegui is not going to to move to a club where he is going to be second choice after scoring so many goals in Serie A and the Champions League for Atalanta.
