Newcastle United fans tell Eddie Howe exactly what to do as ‘workhorse’ Conor Gallagher interest emerges

Newcastle United fans are adamant about what the club should do amid new interest in Conor Gallagher.

With Sean Longstaff potentially leaving this summer, Newcastle United could look to sign a centre-midfielder as a replacement.

One option has emerged from Spain, with Newcastle United interested in Conor Gallagher. He signed for Atletico Madrid in 2024, but could already return to the Premier League after just 12 months.

The 25-year-old is a long-term target for the Magpies, having been linked with a move to the North East back when Steve Bruce was in charge. That interest carried on into Eddie Howe’s reign, with Newcastle seemingly targeting the England international once again.

Newcastle United fans want Conor Gallagher to replace Sean Longstaff

News of interest in Gallagher has delighted the Toon Army, many of which are keen to see him head to St James’ Park as Longstaff’s replacement.

Newcastle United supporters have rushed to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express how happy they would be if Gallagher arrived from Atletico Madrid.

“Conor Gallagher would be a very shrewd piece of business,” wrote one fan.

“Conor Gallagher would be a class upgrade and replacement for Sean Longstaff,” added a second Newcastle United supporter.

This Toon fan commented: “If you sell Longstaff and bring in Conor Gallagher – two years younger, full England international, did well for Simeone, CL and PL ready – that’s really good business. Not every singing will be superstar names, take 8/10’s every week like this all day long.”

“Selling longstaff for £15m and bringing in Gallagher for £35m would be absolutely ridiculous business,” added this Newcastle supporter.

A fifth member of the Toon Army posted on X: “Fresh links to Conor Gallagher have emerged this morning. A deal that I think would be smart at the right price. If Longstaff was to depart he’d be the ideal replacement, a workhorse with a great attitude.”

Finally, this Newcastle United fan wrote: “Gallagher would be an absolute phenomenal replacement for Longstaff BUT he’s going to want to be a starter.”

The problem if Newcastle United do sign Conor Gallagher

There is no doubt that Gallagher would be an excellent signing for Newcastle United. He would be an improvement on Longstaff, who has served the Magpies well in recent years.

However, one issue could arise if Gallagher does move to St James’ Park, as it is not clear where he would fit into Eddie Howe’s starting XI. That is exactly where he will expect to be, as Gallagher will surely not change clubs in a World Cup year without assurances of being a regular starter.

But Newcastle United already have an exceptional midfield. In Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, it could be argued that Newcastle have the Premier League’s best midfield three.

Out of that trio, Joelinton is the most likely to drop out. However, it is difficult to envision Howe dropping his Brazilian powerhouse to accommodate Gallagher.

In that respect, it might come as a surprise if Newcastle United do end up striking a deal for Gallagher.
