Newcastle United fans have found a major problem with Liam Delap despite him being an ‘unreal signing’

Newcastle United want to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, but that might not be straightforward.

The Magpies are eyeing attacking reinforcements this summer, with Eddie Howe eager to add a new striker to his Newcastle United squad.

The Newcastle United manager wants someone who can compliment Alexander Isak, rather than replace him.

Newcastle want Delap to fill that role, with the 22-year-old destined to leave Ipswich Town. With relegation looming, Delap will be available for £30million.

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle United feel that Delap represents great value at £30million.

That is certainly the case, as he has done very well in a struggling Ipswich Town side. He has scored 12 Premier League goals so far, in what has been his debut season in the top flight.

Having Delap and Isak would give the Magpies brilliant depth, but a lot of Toon supporters on social media believe it will be difficult to tempt him to Tyneside.

That is because Delap will want to be a guaranteed starter, whereas that role belongs to Isak.

Following fresh claims of Newcastle’s interest in Delap, this fan wrote on X: “Would be an unreal signing, though he would take some convincing for game time. He wants to be a starter.”

“Only way we get Delap is if he’s starting with Isak just off him in 10 role,” added another fan.

A third Newcastle United supporter commented: “Sorry guys but no chance he comes in as backup when he could be a starter elsewhere.”

This fan summed up the situation, writing: “Not sure I can see him joining us to play second fiddle to Isak to be honest.”

A fourth Toon supporter described Delap as ‘the perfect backup striker’, before adding: “Although he’s almost certainly too good to be backup. Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United all need a centre forward next season.”

“We’ve got no chance. Why would he come to be Isak’s back up after his breakout season?” asked this fan.

Finally another Newcastle United supporter posted: “Can’t see him coming to be backup. At his age after playing every game, clubs like Man United or Spurs are probably more appealing if you are the main man.”

Newcastle United’s plan for Liam Delap

It has been heavily reported that Delap wants to be a regular starter wherever he goes.

That is why it has felt as if Delap to Newcastle United is unlikely.

However, the Magpies have a plan in place that could potentially satisfy the striker’s demands.

The Telegraph state that Newcastle United believe Delap and Isak could play alongside each other for Eddie Howe, rather than instead of one another.

That could allow Delap to play regularly on Tyneside, so perhaps there is a possibility that Toon officials could tempt him to make the move up north.

There will also be a need to rotate, as Newcastle United will definitely be in Europe next season. It is currently unclear which competition they will be in, with Europa Conference League football guaranteed. However, Champions League is the overall aim.

With so many games to play and Isak enduring his own fitness concerns, there is capacity for another striker to play a lot of football.
