Newcastle United fans are desperate for new signings to arrive and think they have worked out who Eddie Howe is going to target next.

It has been a bruising period for Newcastle United in the transfer market, with Eddie Howe’s targets seemingly going anywhere but St James’ Park.

Newcastle are missing out on Joao Pedro, with the 23-year-old the latest player to ignore the Magpies’ advances. Pedro has chosen to join Chelsea, as Howe begins to look elsewhere for a striker.

At the same time, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has become a free agent. He has left Everton upon the expiry of his contract, and is now available on a free transfer.

Newcastle United fans make Dominic Calvert-Lewin transfer claim

In the eyes of many Newcastle United fans on X (formerly known as Twitter), a Toon approach for the 28-year-old feels inevitable.

“We’re gonna get Calvert-Lewin on a free aren’t we?!” asked one supporter.

Another Toon fan shared the same sentiment, asking: “We are gonna end up with Calvert-Lewin aren’t we?”

“Bet ya Eddie signs Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free,” wrote a third Newcastle United supporter.

This member of the Toon Army added: “100% #nufc end up with Calvert-Lewin as Wilson’s replacement. I wouldn’t even be shocked if our only signings when players come back for pre season is Trafford & Calvert-Lewin.”

“Calvert-Lewin is going to end up here isn’t he,” noted another Newcastle fan.

Finally, a sixth Newcastle fan commented: “Don’t be surprised if we have been bidding a lot for Pedro then suddenly just sign Calvert-Lewin on a free instead.”

Why Newcastle United did not sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin in 2024

Calvert-Lewin is a long-term target for Eddie Howe at St James’ Park. He wanted the forward before getting Alexander Isak in 2022, while the England international came incredibly close to joining the club 12 months ago.

As Newcastle United scrambled to comply with PSR, a deal was on for Everton to sign Yankuba Minteh. In turn, Calvert-Lewin would move to Newcastle United.

However, Newcastle’s Calvert-Lewin deal collapsed for financial reasons. Newcastle were stunned by Everton’s price tag, which resulted in Toon officials pulling the plug.

In the end, Calvert-Lewin did not join Newcastle and Minteh did not join Everton. He would instead move to Brighton for £33million, where he has performed very well.

12 months on and Calvert-Lewin has become a free agent, and it will be interesting to see where he takes his career next. In the eyes of some Newcastle United fans, St James’ Park could be his next home.
