Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell is about to enter his first full transfer window at the club.
Mitchell joined the club in July and had the big task of signing players who would fit Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s style of football while dealing with the ongoing pressures of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.
He joined just as Newcastle sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to ensure the club avoided a points deduction for the season.
After a tough start, with Newcastle’s rejected Marc Guehi approaches a big talking point in the summer Mitchell will be keen to hit the ground running in January.
Howe has given Mitchell his targets and it’s down to him to deliver. Among the list is a goalkeeper – a recent report has now linked Newcastle with a Premier League keeper who was once regarded as one of the best in England. Although, a move would also be dependent on what happens with Burnley keeper James Trafford who is wanted by Newcastle

Newcastle eyeing move for Aaron Ramsdale
Aaron Ramsdale only left Arsenal in the summer opting for more game time at Southampton. Things haven’t gone the way of the Saints who currently find themselves bottom of the Premier League at the midway point of the season.
Now, according to SunSport, Newcastle have an interest in Ramsdale but may wait until the summer transfer window to make a move to see how Southampton fair at the end of the season.
The 26-year-old could be hit with a third relegation in his career if things don’t change and another move away would be likely.
Ramsdale, who has been hailed as ‘perfect’, was heavily linked to Newcastle in the summer before moving to Southampton after keeping 14 clean sheets for Arsenal in the 2022/23 campaign but was forced out of the Gunners starting XI after the signing of David Raya.
Mikel Arteta was a big fan of Ramsdale despite him being dropped, as he stated he can never thank the Englishman enough for what he did for him at the Emirates.
Newcastle are also thought to be admirers of Saints winger Tyler Dibling. The 18-year-old has featured in 18 Premier League games this season, scoring twice. Most recently in Southampton’s 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Ramsdale compared to Newcastle goalkeepers
Being at a relegation-threatened club, Ramsdale isn’t short of action between the sticks. He ranks just behind Toon keeper Nick Pope in saves and kept one fewer clean sheet.
Martin Dubravka has only played four games this season but has already completed more shutouts than the pair of them.
| Games (Premier League) | Clean Sheets | Saves | Goals Conceded | |
| Aaron Ramsdale | 12 | 2 | 50 | 22 |
| Nick Pope | 15 | 3 | 54 | 21 |
| Martin Dubravka | 4 | 4 | 4 | 0 |
Dubravka’s contract is up at the end of the season and there was speculation over his future in January with Saudi Pro League club Al-Shabab reportedly interested in the 35-year-old but Howe has since said a move away for him in January “wouldn’t make sense”
