Newcastle United eye Wolves flop as Paul Mitchell plots first major signing

Newcastle United must kick on this summer after winning the Carabao Cup.

The Magpies’ trophy drought is over, but this is only the beginning under the current Newcastle United owners.

PIF chief Yasir Al-Rumayyan wants more trophies, while there is a plan in place to make Newcastle United an elite club.

Part of that plan will see Eddie Howe’s squad significantly strengthened in the summer. Toon officials are already working hard to identify targets for Paul Mitchell to acquire, as he aims to make his first major signing as Newcastle United’s sporting director.

Newcastle United watching Francisco Trincao

The most pressing position that needs strengthening is right wing, with Jacob Murphy being Newcastle’s only option on that side.

That is why Newcastle are looking at fresh options, with the i Paper reporting that the Magpies have been keeping an eye on Sporting CP star Francisco Trincao.

The 25-year-old is enjoying a spectacular season in Portugal, with Trincao boasting nine goals and 15 assists in all competitions.

With 24 goal contributions in total, that is more than Newcastle United’s current wingers.

Francisco Trincao has already played in the Premier League

Eddie Howe likes to sign players who have got Premier League experience, and Trincao has exactly that.

Earlier in his career, the Portuguese attacker spent a year on loan at Wolves.

They signed him on a year-long deal from Barcelona in 2021, and had an option to make the move permanent.

However, they opted against signing Trincao permanently after a disappointing year at Molineux.

He made 30 appearances during his time as a Wolves player, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

Trincao started 16 games, and was unable to justify the hype that had been surrounding him.

While the noise has died down, Trincao has started to hit his potential. He has been outstanding since joining Sporting CP, and Newcastle United will be paying close attention to how impactful he has become in the final third.
