Dean Henderson will reportedly consider a transfer away from Manchester United, and Newcastle have been named as a possible destination.

According to the Daily Mail, the 24-year-old is unhappy with life at Old Trafford, having barely featured this season.

What’s the story?

The report states that Henderson wants to leave Manchester United at the end of the season if he is unable to replace David de Gea as the club’s number one.

They add that he would consider a move in January, but doesn’t expect the Red Devils to allow it.

Newcastle are reportedly an option for Henderson in January, no doubt simply because of their newfound wealth.

Transfer target Dean Henderson has history with Newcastle

The best season of Henderson’s career was on loan with Sheffield United in the Premier Leauge. He was sensational in between the sticks, and played a huge role in a remarkable season for the blades.

However, he still conceded a somewhat comical going when Sheffield United welcomed the Magpies to Bramall Lane.

A long ball up the pitch was flicked on by Andy Carroll, allowing Jonjo Shelvey to race through on goal. The Sheffield United players stood like statues after the linesman put his flag up, while Henderson made no real attempt to stop the Toon midfielder finding the back of the net.

But the goal stood. VAR revealed that Shelvey was onside, leaving the Manchester United loanee and his teammates with egg on their face.

Rating the rumour

A move to gain minutes is important for Henderson, as he has ambitions of going to the 2022 World Cup with England.

But will he get the minutes he needs at St James’ Park? Goalkeeper is without a doubt our strongest position.

Martin Dubravka is a star in the Premier League, while Karl Darlow is an exceptional deputy. As for Freddie Woodman, he will have aspirations of being the future Newcastle number one.

The truth of the matter is that Newcastle don’t need a goalkeeper in January. Meanwhile there are plenty of other areas that desperately require investment.

Henderson is a great player, but not one Newcastle need right now.
