The rumours surrounding Newcastle United and Stefan de Vrij refuse to go away.
While Toon fans are focussed on the club achieving Premier League survival, some supporters will be eager to see what the new owners do during the summer transfer window.
Despite it only being February, speculation over new arrivals is continuing. And reports in Italy are linking Newcastle with a fresh move for the Dutch defender.
De Vrij was linked with the Magpies last month, and reportedly turned down a move to St James’ Park. But despite the reported rejection, Newcastle’s interest is continuing according to FC Inter News.
Newcastle reportedly ‘happy’ to pay £20million for De Vrij
The Italian report states that the Magpies have expressed an interest in signing the central defender in the summer, and are ‘happy’ to pay £20million.
The report also states that Newcastle would double the 30-year-old’s wages if he came to St James’ Park.
But despite our financial position, FC Inter News state that De Vrij is still not interested in a move to the North East.
That was the case in January according to TMW. He would’ve been swapping a Serie A title chase and Champions League football for a relegation battle.
Newcastle will perhaps be more attractive in the summer, if we can achieve Premier League survival.
However, we should already be moving away from De Vrij after his alleged January snub. We only want players who want to play for Newcastle.
The likes of Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes have taken a risk by joining the club midway through the season when relegation is still a possibility. They will be remembered fondly in the future.
But if the likes of De Vrij have already said no once, we shouldn’t give them a second chance.
He’s a wonderful player and an excellent defender, but there are plenty of other options out there for PIF to explore.
