Newcastle transfer news: Toon still want Armando Broja on loan from Chelsea

Armando Broja is reportedly still wanted at Newcastle United on loan.

That is according to journalist Ben Jacobs, who claims that the Magpies are still monitoring his situation in case he becomes available.

However, he adds that Eddie Howe’s side would only be interested in a loan deal that did not include an option to buy. Everton’s stance is reportedly the same, having also tried to sign the striker during the summer.

Broja looked certain to leave Chelsea earlier this year. He had multiple Premier League clubs chasing him after his loan spell at Southampton, where he was called ‘clinical‘ by Alan Shearer for his performances.

The 21-year-old even looked like the perfect backup option for Callum Wilson at St James’ Park. However, a deal didn’t materialise with Broja wanting to be a permanent starter in black and white.

The Albanian instead stayed at Stamford Bridge, and signed a new long-term contract with the Blues. He’s made 14 appearances this season for Chelsea, which is probably more than most expected. However, only one appearance has been from the start.

His tally of one goal isn’t massively encouraging for Chelsea boss Graham Potter, nor should it encourage the Magpies to make a fresh move for him in January.

Newcastle do not need Broja on loan

While Jacobs may claim that Newcastle are still keen on signing Broja on loan, the truth is that we don’t need him.

We are heavily reliant on Wilson at the moment, but Alexander Isak should be available once again after the World Cup break.

Then we’ve got Chris Wood too, who is a decent third-choice striker for Eddie Howe.

It has been claimed that Newcastle will look to replace Wood in 2023, but Broja surely doesn’t fit the bill. Whoever comes in will be a youngster who is willing to bide his time and wait for his chance.

Considering Broja has played a lot of Premier League football in the past two seasons, he isn’t going to be happy sitting on the bench behind Wilson and Isak.

And a temporary loan wouldn’t benefit the Magpies anyway. Sure, he would boost the squad for a few months. But any development would only serve to benefit Chelsea – not Newcastle.

Jacobs adds that Chelsea aren’t even considering loaning out Broja at this stage, and that’s fine. Howe simply doesn’t need him.
