Newcastle United appear set to miss out on AS Roma star Carles Perez.

According to a report from Corriere dello Sport today, the Serie A club are not looking to offload the Spaniard this summer.

General manager Tiago Pinto is said to have consulted with new manager Jose Moutinho over the 23-year-old.

They have decided to keep a hold of the former Barcelona youngster, unless an ‘unavoidable’ offer comes in.

It had been claimed last week by Calciomercato that Newcastle were in negotiations about a possible loan move.

The Magpies apparently wanted to insert an option to buy.

But Corriere believe Mourinho is ready to give Perez game time at Roma.

Forwards aren’t a priority anyway

Perez would have been nice to have, but Newcastle need to be concentrating on getting a defender or two in.

We saw in the opening game against West Ham United that the Magpies are weak at the back, particularly on the left side.

The Magpies created plenty of chances in attack, but there is vulnerability in defence, which is a worry.

As a natural winger, Perez likely wouldn’t have been a natural fit for Bruce’s preferred system anyway.
