Newcastle United have been linked with a shock move for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The Magpies and a host of clubs from La Liga – including Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid – are taking a look at the Blues’ number two according to today’s Daily Star.
Kepa has been at Stamford Bridge since 2018 when he made a £72 million transfer from Athletic Bilbao. That was, and still is, a world-record fee for a goalkeeper.
But it has been a pretty poor stint in England for Kepa, who has made a number of mistakes for Chelsea.
The club moved to sign Edouard Mendy in 2020 having not been satisfied with Kepa’s contributions. The Senegal international has been a revelation for the Blues.
So it seems Chelsea are ready to try and offload Kepa and Newcastle look to be interested.
The club are ‘prepared to show their cards’ if they stay in the Premier League.
Chelsea would apparently be looking for around £50 million for the star. They would also consider a loan offer with an obligation to buy.
Currently Newcastle have Martin Dubravka between the sticks.
He is not having his best season. But the Slovakia international has proven to be a fantastic signing for the club.
Newcastle would be crazy to go for Kepa Arrizabalaga at £50 million
Newcastle may well wish to try and upgrade on Dubravka in the summer.
But it would be a real surprise to see the club moving for Kepa.
Unfortunately, he has really struggled during his time in English football. Perhaps the size of his price tag has weighed too heavy.
He is not somebody who inspires his defence with confidence. And that is a really important trait for a modern-day goalkeeper to have.
It would simply be a ludicrous decision to pay £50 million for Kepa. The likes of Wolves and Arsenal have shown with Jose Sa and Aaron Ramsdale that there are excellent goalkeepers out there for decent prices.
