Newcastle United transfer target Denis Zakaria is set to leave Borussia Monchengladbach, according to BILD.
The Switzerland international has reportedly informed his club that he will not be signing a contract extension.
Zakaria’s current deal expires next summer.
The German club had hoped he would extend.
But, like his teammate Matthias Ginter – also linked with Newcastle recently – Zakaria is set to depart the Bundesliga outfit.
Interestingly, journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that a number of clubs are chasing Zakaria, including two English clubs who are in contact with his agent.
It remains to be seen if one of those clubs are Newcastle, who could do with another box-to-box midfielder.
Siamo La Roma reported in November that Newcastle were keen on the 25-year-old, who has been with Gladbach since 2017 after joining from Young Boys.
Their report claimed PIF were actually leading the hunt for Zakaria.
News that Zakaria is set to leave Gladbach will undoubtedly now place a lot of recruitment officials on red alert.
Whether Newcastle will be able to elbow aside the competition, given the club’s precarious position in the Premier League table, remains to be seen.
Denis Zakaria would be a great signing for Newcastle, but January deal may be unlikely
So it seems Zakaria will be moving on from Gladbach in 2022.
But it looks like he’ll see out the season with Gladbach, like his teammate Ginter.
That would be a frustration for Newcastle, who obviously need players to come in in January.
Perhaps Newcastle’s new financial might could help lure the player.
But that said, Zakaria has been on the radars of some of the world’s top clubs. He may well hold out to join one of them on a free transfer.
