The Magpies have made an awful start to the 2021/22 campaign, and are facing a real battle to stay up.

Eddie Howe has come in and managed to oversee just one win so far.

The squad undoubtedly needs several new faces over the next few weeks.

So far, only Kieran Trippier has take the plunge to come to St. James’ Park.

Newcastle have been linked with so many players, including winger Neres.

Jeunes Footeux claimed over the weekend that the Magpies were mulling over a swoop for the Brazil international.

But it seems there won’t be any chance of that now. Fabrizio Romano has reported the talented 24-year-old should complete a move to Shakhtar from Ajax in the coming hours.

It is down to the final details, and Ajax are lining up Steven Bergwijn, also linked with Newcastle, as Neres’ replacement.

David Neres not someone Newcastle absolutely need right now

Newcastle supporters ought not to be too cut about this development.

While Neres is a great player known for his electric pace and dribbling, he just isn’t what is required at this moment in time.

It is paramount that Newcastle add at last two new central defenders before the window closes.

The club also need to sign at least one new striker with Callum Wilson sidelined. Another midfielder should also be on the agenda.

Really, the wings are the only areas of the team Newcastle don’t desperately need to strengthen at the minute.
