Newcastle United are reportedly in the hunt for Sven Botman.
According to L’Equipe, the Lille defender is on the Magpies’ radar.
Botman has only been with Lille since last year, but has seen his stock soar after playing a key role in the club’s surge to the Ligue 1 title. He’s already had comparisons to his fellow Dutchman Virgil van Dijk (via WhoScored).
He featured in all but one league game, making 47 appearances across all competitions for a total of 4071 minutes.
Lille are said to be in some financial difficulty amid the pandemic, which is the case for a lot of French clubs at the moment.
A number of their key players, like Renato Sanches and Benjamin Andre, are being tipped to leave, with Boubakary Soumare having already joined Leicester City. Mike Maignan has also departed.
Botman, described by L’Equipe as ‘the revelation of last season’, could go but it would take a big offer.
The report states that he is valued at £43 million at least.
Newcastle mention is bizarre
Apparently West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City are all keen on Botman.
But Newcastle are also mentioned, which seems very strange indeed.
Botman – described by CEO Marc Ingla as ‘a very combative player’ last year (via GFFN) – is a player with massive potential, and he has just helped his side to a league title and barely missed a game.
A poor financial situation or not, there is surely no way Newcastle have the money to be able to afford him.
The Magpies could perhaps attempt to get him on loan, but that would just make little sense for Lille.
