Newcastle transfer news: Toon interested in Swiss midfielder Djibril Sow

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Djibril Sow.

That is according to Bild, who claim that the Magpies are one of three Premier League clubs keen on signing the 25-year-old midfielder.

The other clubs mentioned are Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, with Bild stating that Sow has ‘concrete interest’ from teams in England.

Newcastle United are reportedly in the mix, as they look to sign a player who won the Europa League last season. Sow currently plays for Eintracht Frankfurt, who beat Rangers in last season’s Europa League final.

Now he is playing in the Champions League, with Frankfurt set to face Napoli in the knockout stages when the competition returns in February.

Sow is a European winner who is playing in the most reputable club competition around, and he is also at the World Cup right now. He is part of the Switzerland squad that have made it through to the knockout stages.

They face Portugal in the Round of 16 on Tuesday, where the winner will take on Spain or Morocco in the quarters.

Sow has started all three games for his country so far, and got an assist in the win over Serbia. That game saw Sow play alongside a Newcastle United player – and he could give us an advantage in this transfer chase.

Sow has spent the past couple of weeks in Qatar with Fabian Schar. The Toon centre-back arrived at the World Cup on the back of a wonderful start to the season.

But despite his performances for Newcastle, Schar has struggled for minutes. He didn’t feature in the first two games, before finally starting the victory over Serbia.

He will hope to retain his place against Portugal, where his teammate Sow is almost certain to start. He is a regular in the Switzerland midfield, with his size and passing range making him a real asset in the middle of the park.

The former Young Boys ace would be a welcome addition on Tyneside, and Schar could certainly help bring the midfielder to St James’ Park.

However, Arsenal might have more of an advantage. Sow is also playing alongside Granit Xhaka, who is playing a key role in Arsenal’s Premier League title charge.

They have also been linked with Sow, who shares the same agent as Xhaka. That could allow the Gunners to trump the Magpies.
