Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan.

That is according to a report in Italy, with Gazzetta Dello Sport claiming that the Magpies, Chelsea and Manchester United are both keen on bringing in the Dutch right-back.

The report adds that Dumfries’ agent has been in England and held talks with multiple Premier League clubs, as he looks to secure a move for his client.

Gazzetta Dello Sport state that the 26-year-old has a desire to play in the top flight of English football, and his dream could soon become a reality with his Inter Milan future up in the air.

However, any deal for Dumfries is going to cost a lot of money. The report claims that a deal would cost between £35million and £44million.

With that in mind, it is hard to believe that Newcastle are keen, despite the Magpies’ failure to sign the right-back they currently crave.

Denzel Dumfries would be great for Newcastle, but he is not the right fit

Eddie Howe is currently looking to sign a new right-back. He wants better backup for Kieran Trippier, with Emil Krafth still out with injury.

The Magpies have been linked with multiple players, most of which are very young. It looks as if Newcastle want someone who can eventually take Trippier’s place in the starting lineup.

Ivan Fresneda appeared to be the frontrunner, but he is now set to join either Arsenal or Borussia Dortmund, with Newcastle pulling out of the race. There has also been talk surrounding Malo Gusto, but he appears to be on his way to Chelsea.

Dumfries is a new target for Sporting Director Dan Ashworth, but talk of a move for the Netherlands international doesn’t really add up. He is 26 and plays for a club that currently competes in the Champions League. He’s not going to swap that to sit on the bench at St James’ Park.

And a deal would hardly be cheap. With the figures that are reported, Newcastle would have to make Dumfries one of their most expensive signings ever – just for him to be a reserve option!

There is no doubting his ability. He was a star at the World Cup, operating as a right wing-back for Louis van Gaal’s side. Dumfries was seriously impressive in Qatar, and was described as ‘brilliant‘ by BBC pundit Micah Richards.

His ability in the final third would make him great competition for Trippier, and a great replacement when the time is right.

However, Trippier is showing no signs of stopping right now. And if Dumfries is going to leave Inter Milan, it will be to join a club where he will be a guaranteed starter.

That would not be the case with Newcastle, so we can file this rumour under the incredibly unlikely column.
