Newcastle United are reportedly considering a bid for Moussa Marega.

According to Foot Mercato, the Magpies are looking at the Malian international as a possible incoming, amid the injury blow to Callum Wilson.

The English striker is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines after going off against Manchester United.

Marega currently plays for Saudi Arabian outfit Al Hilal, after transferring there in the summer from FC Porto, where he had spent five years.

So far for his new club, Marega has scored five goals in 15 games.

At Porto, he finished with a pretty respectable record of 72 goals in 192 appearances, with a further 33 assists.

Interestingly Foot Mercato say that Everton – managed by Rafa Benitez of course – are also debating making an offer.

Newcastle have actually been linked with Marega a few times in the past. Including in 2019, just after Salomon Rondon and Benitez left the club.

It remains to be seen if there will actually be a bid this time. Apparently the two clubs are considering offers of over £8.4 million.

The club undoubtedly need to get some cover in up top given the injury blow to Wilson.

Newcastle should be aiming higher than Marega

This is probably not a transfer link that is going to send ripples through the fanbase.

Magpies supporters have seen it before. It’s the kind of move the club should have made a couple of years ago.

Now Marega is 30 and playing in Saudi Arabia.

Surely given the club’s new wealth, it is reasonable to hope the club can bring in someone a bit better. Someone who is currently playing in a top five league. Someone who is in fairly good form who can come in and hit the ground running.
