Newcastle United are reportedly making another go of signing Mitchel Bakker and have made a new bid.

Time is ticking for the Magpies in the transfer window, with the deadline on Monday night.

The club have still only brought in two players; Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

It was always going to be a difficult first window for the new owners, who don’t want to be paying over the odds for players.

Left-back appears to be a position officials want to strengthen for Eddie Howe.

The club have been linked with Robin Gosens, but the Germany international looks to be joining Inter Milan.

Newcastle are also keen on Bakker again, following claims a deal would not be happening.

L’Equipe have reported that Newcastle have now lodged a new £16.7 million bid for the Dutchman.

Apparently the player currently has representatives in England talking over a potential deal.

Bakker has only been with his current club Bayer Leverkusen since the start of this season. But it seems there is a chance he could already depart.

Newcastle could absolutely do with a new left-back, and Bakker could really revitalise the position.

The youngster helped himself to a cracking assist yesterday when he crossed low and hard for Karim Bellarabi to finish.

Newcastle’s current options at left-back – Paul Dummett, Jamal Lewis and Matt Ritchie – don’t really have the dynamism to get into crossing positions, or the technical quality to execute good and consistent deliveries.

This is something that Bakker is good at. Leverkusen’s sporting director Rudi Voller has previously stated Bakker ‘combines athletic qualities such as pace and strength in challenges with footballing ability’. He also called him a ‘modern full-back’ (Bundesliga.com).

With Newcastle now possessing a new target man in Wood, he would potentially be a great addition. But Newcastle have got to get a move on.
