Newcastle transfer news: Toon attempted to sign Stefan de Vrij in January

Newcastle United reportedly made an attempt to land Stefan de Vrij from Inter Milan during the January transfer window.

The Magpies endured a difficult few weeks last month.

The club desperately needed to strengthen in a number of different positions.

But clubs obviously knew about Newcastle’s new-found wealth, with several reluctant to let their players go for anything less than a huge fee.

Deals in January are generally more difficult to do anyway, but Newcastle’s new owners definitely had a tough first window, which was to be expected given the club’s league position.

In the end, five new faces came through the door, including one centre-back in Dan Burn.

He made his debut against Aston Villa at the weekend, and looks like he could be a fantastic addition.

The Magpies apparently presented a ‘rich proposal’ for the Netherlands international.

But apparently, the 30-year-old quickly rebuffed the club’s approach and had no desire to move clubs. He is comfortable in Milan and although his contract expires in the summer of 2023, he is open to extending with the Italian giants.

Of course at the moment, Inter are fighting to retain their league title over in Serie A. They sit second just a point behind their rivals AC Milan, but have a game in hand.

de Vrij – who is valued at around £25 million (via FC Inter News) – is a key player for them, and it is no surprise he didn’t depart mid-season.

Stefan de Vrij transfer was probably wishful thinking for Newcastle

Newcastle may have tried to land de Vrij last month, but they were always going to struggle to get someone like that.

The former Lazio star is a mainstay in Simone Inzaghi’s starting XI, and will be key in their push for another Scudetto.

Newcastle are fighting against relegation and so, luring players from title-chasing teams was a big ask.

Perhaps there may be fresh hope of a move in the summer.

Newcastle will obviously need to stay in the Premier League though if they are to be an attractive option for the player.
